The Old US-2 trail is 2 miles out and back for a total of 4
miles. This section of US-2 was replaced
in the 1930’s it’s a narrow gravel road that was one lane as it passed through
the mountainous area of the trail. The
trail runs parallel with the new US-2 and rises several hundred feet in
elevation. The trail goes through the
forest with lots of areas that offers spectacular views of the Kootenai
River. The trail was mostly uphill with
a gradual grade that made a pleasant hike.
Shannon Lake is accessible off the trail via a side trail. The trail to Shannon Lake is short about a
quarter of a mile and has a 200-300 foot elevation gain. The view of the lake is well worth the
additional hike.
